Living in Chachoengsao in 2026: Rent, the Train to Bangkok and Hospitals

By Erik Lind · Checked on: 19 October 2026 · ฿33.4 = US$1 (19 Oct 2026)

Chachoengsao (ฉะเชิงเทรา) is a river town on the Bang Pakong (บางปะกง) river, 61 km by rail east of Bangkok (กรุงเทพฯ). Hardly anyone writes about it as a place to live, which is part of its appeal: small-town Thai life, low rents and a ฿13 train ride to the capital.

This guide covers what we could check: rents from real listings, the train, electricity, fuel and hospitals. We also say plainly what we couldn’t check. For how it compares with Chiang Mai (เชียงใหม่), Bangkok and Hua Hin (หัวหิน), see our main cost of living guide for 2026.

Read this first: the data is thin. Numbeo, the crowd-sourced cost site most guides quote, shows 0 entries in the past 12 months for Chachoengsao (last update 19 April 2025; checked 19 Oct 2026). There is no reliable “average” for anything here. Every figure below is an individual listing or an official price, with the date we checked it. Where we found nothing we could cite, we leave the cell blank rather than guess.

Who Chachoengsao suits (and who it doesn’t)

It suits people who want a calm Thai town with Bangkok close by: hospitals, the airport and city errands are a train or a drive away. It also suits people who are happy to live mostly in Thai, or want to learn.

It may not suit you if you want an expat community, lots of English, a beach or nightlife. Outside the town centre you’ll probably need your own car or motorbike.

Housing

These are asking prices on listing sites, not averages. One listing is one landlord’s price on one day.

Type Listed rent Source Status on 19 Oct 2026
Studio, ~24 m², UDEE Condo, Sothon (โสธร) ฿4,500 and ฿4,900/month (two units) Dot Property Still listed
Studio, 25 m², Escent Ville (near Robinson Lifestyle) ฿8,000/month Dot Property Still listed
1-bed, 29 m², Escent Ville, 8th floor ฿9,500/month PropertyHub (posted 27 Sep 2026) Still listed
2-bed, 43 m², Escent Ville ฿15,900/month (1-year lease) Livinginsider Confirmed 17 Oct; the page didn’t load on 19 Oct
Townhouse, 3 bed, 200 m², Na Mueang (หน้าเมือง) ฿12,000/month FazWaz Still listed (shown as US$359)
Houses, 3 bed, Khlong Luang Phaeng (คลองหลวงแพ่ง) ฿9,000-22,500/month FazWaz Still listed (prices shown in US$)

Read the map. Khlong Luang Phaeng is technically in Mueang Chachoengsao (เมืองฉะเชิงเทรา) district, but the housing estates listed there sit on the Lat Krabang (ลาดกระบัง) side, near Suvarnabhumi (สุวรรณภูมิ) airport. That is a long way from the old town. Na Mueang and Sothon are the town itself.

Lease terms. The Escent Ville listing states one month in advance plus a two-month deposit, which is common in Thailand. Check your own lease.

FazWaz currency note. On 19 Oct 2026 FazWaz showed prices to us in US dollars only. The baht figures above are the ones it showed on 17 Oct 2026; the dollar figures match them at today’s rate.

Rent-only budget tiers (our estimate)

This uses the same three tiers as our Toolkit’s Budget Planner, filled with the listings above. It is rent only, not a total, because there is no verified data for living costs.

Tier How we pick the rent Monthly rent
Lean Studio, UDEE Condo ฿4,900 (US$147)
Comfortable 1-bed, Escent Ville ฿9,500 (US$284)
Premium 2 × the 1-bed rent (larger place) ฿19,000 (US$569)

Add your own food, transport, insurance and other costs. Our health insurance guide explains why insurance belongs in every budget.

Food and groceries

We found no current, citable price data for street food, restaurants or groceries in Chachoengsao. Numbeo has no entries, and the Ministry of Commerce publishes provincial price indices, not prices per dish. So we give no numbers.

Item Price Source
Street-food meal No citable data No citable data
Restaurant meal No citable data No citable data
Groceries, monthly No citable data No citable data

The town has markets and street stalls, and the Escent Ville listing mentions a Robinson Lifestyle mall nearby. Track your first month of spending and use that.

Getting to Bangkok and getting around

The train

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) timetable, checked on 19 Oct 2026, lists 12 trains a day from Hua Lamphong to Chachoengsao Junction (ชุมทางฉะเชิงเทรา):

These trains leave from Hua Lamphong, not the newer Krung Thep Aphiwat (กรุงเทพอภิวัฒน์) central station. Timetables change, so check the SRT site before you travel.

Fuel and driving

Bangchak’s retail prices, in force since 9 Oct 2026 and unchanged when we checked on 19 Oct: Gasohol 95 ฿41.44/L, Gasohol 91 ฿41.07, E20 ฿35.69, Diesel ฿42.94, Diesel B20 ฿37.19. Bangchak’s figures exclude local tax, and pump prices in the province can differ slightly.

Songthaews, buses and rentals

We couldn’t verify current songthaew or local bus fares from an official source, so ask the driver before you board. We also found no reliable long-term car or motorbike rental prices to quote. If you ride, the licence, helmet and insurance rules are in our guide to Sakon Nakhon (สกลนคร), a city in Isan (อีสาน) where a motorbike is close to essential: living in Sakon Nakhon in 2026. The rules apply across Thailand.

Electricity, internet and mobile

Chachoengsao is served by the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), not Bangkok’s MEA. From the September 2026 bill, homes that use more than 150 units a month pay:

Units per month Rate
1-200 ฿3.0000/unit
201-400 ฿4.1584/unit
401 and up ฿4.3583/unit

On top come the Ft charge (฿0.1623/unit for Sep-Dec 2026), a monthly service fee and VAT (PEA notes the unit rates exclude all three). Homes using 150 units or less pay a cheaper stepped rate for the first 25 units (PEA notice, 11 Sep 2026).

Our arithmetic, not a bill: 300 units in a month would be ฿600 for the first 200 units, ฿415.84 for the next 100 and ฿48.69 Ft, so ฿1,064.53 before the service fee and VAT. Air-conditioning use is the big swing.

Mobile and fibre plans are sold nationally by the big operators, but we found no Chachoengsao-specific prices to cite.

Healthcare

Hospital Type What we verified
Buddhasothorn Hospital Public, Ministry of Public Health regional hospital (level A) 174 Maruphong Road, in town; 650 beds in use (ministry register, figures updated May 2026); HA re-accreditation valid to 24 Feb 2028
Kasemrad Chachoengsao Private, Bangkok Chain Hospital group The group’s first hospital, opened 7 August 1984 (hospital website)
Ruampat Chachoengsao Private Chachoengsao-Phanom Sarakham (ฉะเชิงเทรา-พนมสารคาม) Road, Bang Tin Pet (บางตีนเป็ด); 24-hour line 033-050-600
Chularat 11 International Private In Bang Pakong district on the Bang Na-Trad (บางนา-ตราด) road, not in town (hospital website, checked 17 Oct 2026; down on 19 Oct)

For complex specialist care, Bangkok’s large private hospitals are within reach. Ask any hospital whether it offers direct billing with your insurer before you need it.

Visas and paperwork

Living here doesn’t change the visa rules. See our guides to the retirement visa and the DTV visa, and our first 30 days checklist for address reporting and other early tasks.

If you visit first: an easy day trip

Visa-free entry is now 30 days for many nationalities (Public Relations Department, 4 Sep 2026), which is enough for a scouting trip. At ฿13 each way by train, Chachoengsao is one of the cheapest day trips from Bangkok.

Before you move: a short checklist

  1. Spend a few days in town and walk the neighbourhoods near the station, the temple and the hospitals.
  2. Look at listings yourself on the sites in our sources. Prices and availability change weekly.
  3. Get a real insurance quote for your age and health.
  4. Decide on transport. Near the station you can manage without a car; further out you’ll want one.
  5. Track your first month of spending, since there’s no local data to plan from.

FAQ

Is Chachoengsao a good place to retire?

It can be, if you want a quiet Thai town close to Bangkok and don’t need an expat scene. Rents in the listings we found are low, and there’s a large public hospital and private hospitals in and around town. It’s a personal fit, so visit first.

How much is rent in Chachoengsao?

In the listings we checked on 19 Oct 2026, studios started at ฿4,500 a month and a one-bed condo was ฿9,500. A three-bed townhouse in town was listed at ฿12,000. These are asking prices, not averages.

How do I get from Bangkok to Chachoengsao by train?

Take an SRT train from Hua Lamphong: 12 a day, 61 km, about 1 to 2 hours, ฿13 in third class (SRT timetable, checked 19 Oct 2026). Trains do not leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat.

Is Chachoengsao cheaper than Chiang Mai or Bangkok?

On rent, the listings suggest it can be. For food and daily costs there’s no current data, so we can’t say. Our main cost of living guide compares the cities where data exists.

Is there much English spoken?

We found no data for the town. As a small provincial town without a big expat community, plan to use some Thai. Our guide to learning Thai has a starting plan.

Why are there no food prices in this guide?

Because we couldn’t find any we could cite. Numbeo has no entries for Chachoengsao, and we won’t publish a number we can’t source.

What we couldn’t verify

  • Food, restaurant and grocery prices.
  • Internet and mobile prices specific to Chachoengsao.
  • Songthaew and local bus fares.
  • Long-term car and motorbike rental prices.
  • The Escent Ville 2-bed listing (฿15,900) and Chularat 11’s website, which didn’t load on 19 Oct 2026; both were last confirmed on 17 Oct 2026.
